Physician Health = Patient Health: Case Study to highlight the essence and impact of Lifestyle Medicine
2:00 PM - 3:15 PMSummary
A Personal Lifestyle Medicine Case Study
The evidence for lifestyle medicine is immense as nearly 80% of all chronic disease is preventable, and lifestyle behaviours are responsible for 40% of all premature deaths. The strong evidence that healthy doctors are more likely to produce healthy patients was enough motivation for me to commit to using myself as a case study.
Presentation
Family Medicine doctor - busy schedule with little time or effort dedicated to meal planning, nutrition, physical activity or emotional well-being. The personal health risks were also exacerbated by ethnicity and family history of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Investigations
Physical Evaluation
ACLM Vital Signs Form
Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQi)
Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)
Intervention
Intensive Lifestyle Interventions with SMART goals for each of these domains over a 8 week period.
Nutrition – Reduce meat intake to improve cardiovascular health. Switch from full-fat to low-fat dairy products and switch all wheat products to whole-meal and whole-grain or replace with daily portions of fresh fruit/legumes to adhere to Michael Pollan’s ‘Food Rules’.
Exercise – At least two 45-minute whole-body weight lifting sessions per week, one 30-minute intense 5km run per week, one 30-minute swimming session of at least 20 pool lengths and at least two 30-minute walks in the local park.
Sleep & Stress – The implementation of a strict schedule to ensure adequate sleep of 7-9 hours per night as per American Academy Sleep Medicine recommendations.
Outcomes
Improved BMI, Reduced Body Fat %, Increased Muscle Mass and improved PSQi and PSS scores.
There is strong evidence that a whole food plant based diet is associated with favourable quality of life outcomes - improved self-efficacy, energy levels, self-esteem and food enjoyment.
Resistance exercise and strength training has been shown to reduce fatigue, increase metabolic rate and improve sleep.
