Work-family balance/conciliation in the real world and the modern family situation. A design thinking approach

10:35 AM - 11:30 AM

Summary

Background
Conciliation between work and family is a hard task in modern life especially when you are a healthcare provider. Moreover, if we add to that a special family structure (single parent family, an immigrant/foreign spouse, LGTB parenting) that may suppose an extra load to conciliate, not to mention the frequent lack of acceptance from their societies and/or families.
Through design thinking, participants will explore the conciliation concept from a different perspective to better understand the problem.

Didactic Method
After a brief introduction explaining how to use design thinking over this topic and a summary of key points to discuss (10 minutes PowerPoint), small groups will be formed to facilitate working on a specific problem.
The first part will include understanding the conciliation situation, analysing problems regarding it, and selecting one to solve (15 minutes). The following step is: Brainstorming solutions to the chosen problem, deciding the optimal one to solve it, and building a prototype of how to apply it (15 minutes). Groups will report their conclusion and gather feedback to evaluate the need to reconstruct their design (15 minutes). Finally, conclusions are established and some guidelines for clinical practice are facilitated (5 minutes).

Objectives
Create a safe space of confidence where participants will be given the chance to talk about difficulties in conciliation and integration in society. Together we achieve conclusions about challenges and solutions in daily life and we offer clear guidelines on how to cope with these situations and overcome them

Takeaways

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Practise a design thinking approach in conciliation
2. Identify challenges in special family situations and their solutions
3. Be confident discussing this topic and encourage them to apply this method in their work

Exploring Trauma & Burnout: Impacts & strategies

11:35 AM - 12:30 PM

Summary

Aim: Acknowledge trauma and burnout within the medical community and explore strategies to facilitate doctors’ health and wellbeing

Content: This interactive workshop will draw on an experiential teaching and learning styles, drawing on what participants share about their own experiences.

Workshop will start with a comprehensive overview of exploring trauma, vicarious / shared trauma as well as burnout; what it is and what it is not.

Participants will be divided into small groups to explore several concepts such as vicarious trauma, burnout, reflect on how trauma informed /supportive their workplace is, barriers to seeking care for themselves as well as what maintains their wellbeing and good mental health.

This will be followed by discussion and exploration of risk and protective factors, both individual, organizational and systemic. Workshop will end with an exploration of self-care and stress management strategies for doctors.

Many doctors with health issues don’t access care and are reluctant to talk openly about their struggles. This places doctors at increased risk of poor mental health.

Goals: For doctors to acknowledge the impact their work can have on their own health and wellbeing, overcome barriers for seeking care and reflect with colleagues in a safe and contained space.
