Gay men's health workshop

2:05 PM - 3:40 PM

Summary

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a very diverse group with specific health needs compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

This skills-building workshop will cover different health issues of MSM from an Australian perspective with comparisons of other countries. Participants will be able to take away knowledge and apply principles in their respective countries.

Firstly the workshop will cover why MSM are an often hidden and vulnerable group who face stigma and discrimination. There will be case discussions covering sexual health and HIV topics including sexual history taking, STI screening, and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis. Other issues covered include recreational drugs, chemsex and alcohol issues, mental health, partner violence, and the older gay man.

General practitioners and Family Physicians from Japan, Brazil, France and Hong Kong will also present the situation and issues in their countries. There will be opportunities for facilitated discussion groups for workshop participants to discuss the situation in their respective countries. The discussion group will also cover potential barriers for healthcare delivery and brain-storming solutions to ensure practices are culturally sensitive and gay-friendly.

There is a need for the GP, as a generalist, to deliver patient-centred care which is non-judgemental and comprehensive to MSM for their overall health and well-being.
