Session summary

Lipoedema is a poorly understood, hereditary disorder causing painful disfiguration of the body, often confused as obesity. Affecting 11% of women, emerging recognition of lipoedema as a lypodystrophy and a disease is allowing stigma and blame to be removed, and meaningful treatment to be offered.

Biography

Dr Shayan is a Melbourne-trained Specialist Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon. He attended the University of Melbourne, before undertaking a PhD in cancer biology at the Ludwig Institute and Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne. He obtained a fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the Royal Australasian College of Surgery in 2012, and since 2013 has co-headed the Lymphatic and Regenerative Medicine research group at the O’Brien Institute, St Vincent’s Institute for Medical Research. Ramin has over 45 academic publications, including book chapters and papers in the journals Nature, Cancer Cell and Nature Reviews. He is an editor of five international academic journals and is interested in all areas of plastic. He has a particular interest in microsurgical treatment for lymphoedema. Ramin is a member of the Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery Team at St Vincent’s Hospital, and holds public hospital appointments at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. He has an interest in microsurgery, particularly in the microsurgical treatment of lymphoedema; the management of adipose tissue related disorders (such as lipoedema) and in vascular malformations. Ramin is a member of the Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery Team at St Vincent’s Hospital, and Victorian Melanoma Unit, and holds appointments at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. Ramin lobbied the State Government for funding for establishment of the St Vincent’s Lymphoedema Service, to which Ramin is the consulting plastic surgeon. Ramin has worked as a consultant to in the biotechnology sector in Australia and the US. He has served as the Victorian representative for plastic surgery to the board of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and as convener of the Plastic Surgery Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Annual Scientific Congress.
