This session is designed to enable GPs to diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer, understand histopathology report formats and terminology; and the correlation of the dermatoscopic features of skin lesions and the corresponding histological findings.

Learning outcomes
  • Diagnose and appropriately manage the various types of BCC, SCC and Melanoma
  • Identify the key features of pigmented and non-pigmented skin lesions using dermatoscopic analysis
  • Diagnose melanoma using clinical clues
  • Differentiate between innocuous lesions and those which require treatment
  • Perform skin cancer excisions on lesions requiring surgical treatment according to recommended guidelines

Session summary

Skin Cancer is a major health issue in Australia. In 2013 melanoma was the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and Basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are the most frequently diagnosed cancers in Australia even though they aren't included in cancer statistics. This workshop will provide training and comprehensive guidelines to general practitioners on the diagnosis and treatment of the various types of skin cancer as well as information on histopathology report formats, terminology and the correlation of the dermatoscopic features of skin lesions and the corresponding histological findings.

Biography

Professor Simon Clark graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He trained at Wellington Hospital and at Royal the Melbourne Hospital. Prof. Clark completed a Fellowship of Dermatopathology at the Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia. He has worked in public and private pathology and has lectured at the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland. Prof. Clark is involved in general practitioner education in skin cancer medicine. He presently runs the pathology component of the postgraduate certificate courses in skin cancer medicine at the University of Queensland and also lectures in the Masters of Medicine course. In 2016, he was appointed visiting professor in dermatology at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Prof. Clark joined Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology in 2011.

Biography

Associate Professor Paul Fishburn is a primary care skin cancer clinician, based at Norwest Skin Cancer Centre in Sydney. He completed a Pharmacy degree prior to completing his medical degree from the University of Sydney, a Diploma in Practical Dermatology from the University of Wales and a Master of Medicine degree in Skin Cancer from the University of Queensland. After five years in general medicine, Dr Fishburn attained Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Since 2002, he has worked exclusively in the field of skin cancer medicine and surgery. In 2009, Dr Fishburn was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Skin Cancer Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland, where he is the course coordinator of ‘Advanced Clinical Cases’ in skin cancer diagnosis and management. He was appointed a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Sydney in 2017 and lectures on skin cancer diagnostics. He is co-author of the Australian Cancer Council guidelines on the management of melanoma and keratinocytic skin cancers.

Biography

Associate Professor John Pyne is a University of Sydney medical graduate. He holds a Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer) degree and PhD (Thesis on dermoscopy-histopathology correlations in BCC and SCC) from the University of Queensland. Assoc. Prof. Pyne has previous appointments at the Melanoma Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Skin Cancer Clinic, St George Private Hospital, Sydney. He is a Fellow and past President of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Assoc. Prof. Pyne has previously held the position of Program Director for the Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer) degree at the University of Queensland. His professional interests involve the early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, with an emphasis on dermoscopy-histopathology correlations. He currently also runs a busy skin cancer practice in Gymea in South Eastern Sydney.

Biography

After graduating from the University of Melbourne In 2006 With a MBBS and BMedSC, Dr Grace Liu undertook her intern year at the Geelong Hospital. She completed her first year of training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2008, then continued her training in anatomical pathology at the Alfred Hospital until 2011. During this time, Dr Liu also participated in teaching duties at Monash. In 2011, she took up residency at Cabrini Hospital under the guidance of Dr William Downey, before spending her final year of training at the Western Hospital. After completing her training In late 2012, Dr Liu became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and joined Melbourne pathology in February 2013 as a Histopathologist. She is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology and the Australasian Dermatopathology society and is also Involved In dermatology registrar teaching In Victoria. Dr Liu is part of the Sonic Skin DX reporting team with a special Interest In dermatopathology.
