Session summary

Presenting a showcase of leaders and the innovations, programs and projects they are driving to improve the delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.

In this session, we’ll hear from GP Marcy Holdsworth (James Cook University), on their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GPs in training support and advocacy program.

GP Synergy’s Anthony Paulson discusses the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organisational and Governance structure and Practice manager program.

Dr Danielle Arabena (GPTQ), walks through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health multimedia resources-YouTube channel, podcasts, patient information sheets and in-practice guides.

Dr Kali Hayward (GPEX) looks at supporting trainees in Aboriginal health placements; the 'roving registrar', regular meet ups, and direct observation visits.

Biography

Dr Olivia O’Donoghue is descendant from the Yankunytjtjara and the Narungga Nations people. Olivia is an RACGP Fellow currently living and working in South Australia. Olivia has experience living and working in urban and remote Northern Territory, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. Olivia has worked as a Cultural and Medical Educator in the general practice training space since 2014, including six years with Northern Territory General Practice Education (NTGPE). Olivia is the currently the Medical Educator for the Indigenous General Practice Registrar Network (IGPRN). IGPRN is a national network that provides clinical education, exam preparation support, mentorship, advocacy and cultural support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GPs in training. Olivia is also currently the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Censor for the RACGP representing National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health on matters pertaining to the quality assurance processes for education, training, policy and assessment. Including support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors undertaking RACGP training. Olivia has been on the board of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA) in 2009, 2017 and returns to the board in 2022.

Biography

Marcy has a Bachelor of Science and a MBA. Working in various roles over 20 years at James Cook University, the City Council, Department of Defence, Division of General Practice and not-for-profit organisations. Marcy’s current role at JCU as Manager of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Team has fuelled her passion for improving and developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health in remote and rural communities. Marcy is passionate about supporting all registrars, and particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registrars and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Services.

Biography

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Education Unit Manager, GP Synergy. Anthony Paulson is a proud Aboriginal man and his people are Worimi and Mununjali people. Anthony is a saltwater man from Taree on the Mid North Coast of NSW. He has experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) setting and extensive experience working with community in both government and non-government roles, in rural and remote locations within NSW. Anthony thoroughly enjoys working with different stakeholders and learning from different communities and his Elders. In 2017, Anthony joined GP Synergy as the Manager of the Aboriginal Cultural Education Unit and enjoys the diversity the role brings.

Biography

Dr Danielle Arabena, a GP of Torres Strait Islander descent is medical educator and cultural educator for GPTQ. Danielle is the RACGP Queensland representative on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Health faculty and hosts Indigenous Health MedTalk podcast. Over the years Danielle has developed a special interest in the holistic medicine of ‘womens business’ including birth, perinatal and breastfeeding medicine.

Biography

Dr Kali Hayward is a descendant from the Warnman people of Western Australia (WA). Kali is committed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and palliative care is an area she feels more and more drawn towards. In the future, she hopes to advocate for culturally appropriate centres for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with palliative care needs. Kali is the current president of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA), which represents another key area she is passionate about. Her presidency allows her to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GPs and general practice registrars.
