Capturing best educational practice in Australian GP training: an appreciative inquiry approach

Session summary

This study aims to identify, and support the retention and scaling up, of strong regional education approaches and initiatives. The study will develop a conceptual model of best practice in GP training to guide developing and evaluating future educational initiatives.

Biography

A/Prof. Sturman has 30 years of experience in general practice and has been active in research throughout her career. Her key research interests are: work-based learning in general practice training and medical education; managing and teaching ethical issues and professionalism in general practice; health and social care for vulnerable populations; and assessment in medical education.

Abstract

Biography

Dr Rebecca Lock is a GP and Medical Educator passionate about quality, patient centred holistic care in General Practice. Rebecca became involved in medical education in 2010 as a supervisor and went on to become an educator in 2011. She is currently working as ADF Medical Educator for General Practice Training Queensland and is the National Assessment Advisor for the Clinical Competency Exam for RACGP. Clinically, Rebecca works at Noosa Outlook Medical Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Rebecca has interests in chronic disease management, women’s health, transgender medicine, clinical reasoning and doctor’s health.

Telehealth consultations in GP registrars’ practice: a cross-sectional study nested within ReCEnT

Session summary

This presentation will address the prevalence and associations of GP registrars' telehealth consultations, compared to face-to-face, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research will examine the patient, registrar, practice, and consultation variables that were associated with performing telehealth.

Biography

Dr Katie Fisher splits her time between research at GP Synergy, teaching at the University of Newcastle, and clinical work as a GP in Newcastle NSW. Katie is a new GP Fellow and recently completed a 12-month term as a GP Academic Registrar. Katie's academic post focused on GP registrars' use of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Katie was awarded the 2021 RACGP Foundation Charles Bridges-Webb Memorial Award and the 2021 NSW/ACT Dr Charlotte Hespe Research Award.

Mind the Gaps: preparedness of new general practitioner fellows for independent practice

This presentation reports findings from “Mind the Gaps”, a mixed-methods research study exploring GP new fellows’ perceived preparedness for independent practice. Potential strategies to address gaps and to enhance supports for new fellows will be discussed.

Erin Waters is a GP and medical educator based in Brisbane with current roles as Lead ME - Supervisors GPTQ, Senior Lecturer - University of Qld, Assessment Development ME with the RACGP and RACGP Qld Faculty Education Committee Chair. Erin is committed to supporting other GPs and particularly GPs in training and GP supervisors through fostering connection, collegiality and continuing professional development at all career stages.

Dr Hayley Thomas is a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland's General Practice Clinical Unit, and practices as a GP on the north side of Brisbane. She has research interests in whole person care and the GP-Patient relationship.
