Session summary

This study will explore the barriers and enablers of healthcare assessment (HA) delivery in older Australians by understanding patient and clinician perspectives. A better understanding of patient and clinician perspectives of HAs will enable the development of targeted education resources to improve uptake of HAs and optimise items covered within a HA.

Biography

Dr Laxmi Iyengar is GP Academic Registrar at the Department of General Practice and School of Rural health, Monash University. She is also an Editorial Fellow for the Australian Journal of General Practice. Laxmi is passionate about evidence based medical practices and advancing the knowledge base of primary care research.

Primary care mental health consultation patterns before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

The findings of our study illustrate the initial and longstanding impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health consultations within the Australian Primary Care setting and provide additional data for policymakers to facilitate further examination in continuing MBS subsidisation post-pandemic.

Vivien Nguyen is a final year medical student at Macquarie University. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Vision Science and a Master of Optometry from the Queensland University of Technology.

Priorities for improving primary prevention of acute rheumatic fever in primary care

This research outlines consensus priorities of primary care staff on improving management of skin sores and sore throats among people at risk of acute rheumatic fever and explores how these priorities can be implemented.

Biography

Dr Rosemary Wyber is General Practitioner who completed her Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and her General Practice training in Aboriginal Community Controlled Clinics in the Northern Territory of Australia. Rosemary’s PhD focused on strategies to reduce the burden of rheumatic heart disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. She is the lead author of the RHD Endgame Strategy with Telethon Kids Institute and a Senior Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. Rosemary also works at Australian National University on chronic disease risk assessment among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
