Delegates will explore ways to discuss alcohol with women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy through case study discussions; and build on their strengths and capacity to deliver brief interventions.
Learning outcomes
1. Increased awareness of the impact of FASD on people’s lives.
2. Increased understanding of the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and when planning pregnancy.

Biography
A GP and Addiction specialist, Hester is the chair of the RACGP Addiction Special Interest Group. She works for NSW Health in Sydney and Wagga and in private practice in Sydney. She is currently undertaking a PhD focused on GPs’ experience of patients with chronic pain and prescription opioid use disorder.

Dr Liz Sturgiss is a clinical general practitioner, NHMRC Investigator and primary care researcher. Liz is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Primary and Allied Health Care, Monash University, and Visiting Fellow at The Australian National University. As an early career clinician researcher, Liz has experience in implementation research in primary care with expertise in the complex area of obesity management. Liz leads an emerging research program on the management of complex and stigmatised health issues in primary care focusing on translating guidelines into real-world practice. Her research is based on theoretical principles from behaviour change and implementation science. She is a practising GP caring for people with substance dependence and complex multi-morbidity.

Sophie is the Chief Operating Officer for NOFASD Australia. Sophie has held positions in frontline services and senior management, across a range of sectors to include AOD, OOHC and justice, providing services to multiple young people and families impacted by FASD. Sophie is a FASD educator and coordinator of NOFASD’s lived experience expert advisory groups. She is a member of the Steering Committees for the National FASD Awareness Campaign and the FASD Diagnostic Guideline Review, as well as the FASD Hub Advisory Committee and numerous additional FASD networks. Sophie has lived experience of FASD.
