If not opioids, then what?

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Session summary

We’re all treating patients who are either expecting or are dependent on opioids to manage their chronic non-cancer pain, and this is creating an enormous burden on our patients and our health system, as well as ourselves, the GPs.

To counteract this, we need alternative treatment approaches and the right treatment team, and this session will explore who is best placed to be on this team and how each can work together. This presentation will be given by a GP pain specialist, a specialist pain physiotherapist and pain psychologist.

Abstract

Learning outcomes

1. An appreciation of the team approach to the management of chronic pain, avoiding the use of prolonged opioids
2. Knowledge of the focus of each discipline involved in the management of chronic pain
3. Confidence to initiate some new pain management strategies with patients next week
