This is an interactive 90-minute session that will focus on culture centred palliative care, with the presenters drawing on the NT Aboriginal Palliative Care Model to discuss the links between an Aboriginal patient, their family and the palliative care service providers. This session will also provide participants with some practical skills and knowledge utilising the companion guide to the palliative care model and insight into the Groote Eylandt community approach to care planning.

Biography

Jonathan Jauncey is a Yawuru man from Broome in the Kimberley’s, he has over 15 years’ experience working in remote communities across northern Australia as an educator and project coordinator in areas such as Health promotion, Preventable chronic disease, community development, Indigenous employment and Palliative Care. Jonathan is currently the Northern Territory PEPA manager, he has been with Territory Palliative Care for the past 5 years and brings a wealth of knowledge about traditional Lore to his role

Abstract

Biography

Timothy Senior works as a GP at the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in South West Sydney, and holds clinical lecturer positions at Western Sydney University and Sydney University. He is the Medical Advisor of the RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Chair of the Environmental Impacts in General Practice network in the RACGP NFSI. He writes on General Practice, the social causes of ill health and successfully crowdfunded Wonky Health, a column on the Croakey health website, on the health effects of policy decisions. He won the Gavin Mooney memorial essay prize for an article on the language used in climate change campaigning.
