ALM12 - Rural Hospital Clinical Simulation

Summary

The Rural Hospital Clinical Simulation (RHCS) is a 6-hour ALM workshop that aims to enhance rural emergency medicine skills using hands-on simulated scenarios that reflect the challenges faced when living and working in rural and remote communities.

Abstract

Biography

Dr Ross Wilson graduated from the University of Sydney and undertook postgraduate training in both Australia and the United Kingdom. He has enjoyed nearly four decades working as a rural General Practitioner with a clinical practice that incorporates procedural anaesthetics and obstetrics, in many locations both within NSW, and also further afield in remote outback Australia. His other professional activities include Chair of the Education Committee, Rural Faculty RACGP, Member of the Joint Consultative Committee on Obstetrics and Senior Lecturer with the University of Sydney and University of Western Sydney. Outside of medicine, he maintains a strong interest in farming and successfully breeding Suffolk and Southdown sheep.

Dr Eugene Wong is a rural GP Anaesthetist and Director of Medical Services based in Emerald, Central Queensland. He also works casually as a Retrieval Physician. He has lived and worked rurally throughout his career, including in Katherine, Longreach and Thursday Island. He is a keen medical educator with a particular interest in simulation. He is an active ALS2, EMST and APLS instructor and holds a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Simulation.

Dr Ken Wanguhu is a procedural rural general practitioner at Waikerie Medical Centre and a member of the Rural Emergency Responder Network (RERN) in South Australia. He is the RACGP Rural Faculty Censor and has also held leadership roles on the Boards of the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency and River Docs. He has worked in the Riverland for the past 18 years after moving his family from South Africa and has been recognised for his commitment to rural practice receiving the prestigious RACGP Brian Williams Award for his work in mentoring and supporting other rural GPs.

Dr Liam Flynn is a GP who works for the RFDS performing primary health care and retrievals in remote parts of Queensland. He has completed advanced skills in paediatrics and anaesthetics and a diploma of obstetrics. He is actively involved in training medical students and GP registrars.

Dr Michael Clements is a Rural Generalist Training Advisor with the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway and owns two general practices in Townsville. Michael holds an FARGP with an ARST in Small Town Rural General Practice Michael after serving in the RAAF for 13 years and then in Ingham as the Director of Medical Services before focusing on private general practice.

Dr John Buckley is a member of the RACGP Rural Education Committee and the Director of Medical Education at General Practice Training Queensland (GPTQ). Dr Buckley qualified at the University and Queensland and received his GP Fellowship in 1992. He has practised at Albany Creek in Brisbane for the past 22 years, and is passionate about general practice and the important role of training our future GPs.

Dr Tim Mooney was brought up in George Town, Tasmania where he returned and joined George Town Medical Centre in February 1982 and has been in rural general practice since. He is heavily involved in the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Royal Flying Doctors Service and Rural Doctors Association of Tasmania. Tim is a visiting medical officer at the public George Town Hospital and at the Ainslie Nursing Home, Low Head and the George Town Council. He has been the company medical officer for the Bell Bay Aluminium Smelter since June 1984. In June 2017 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for “significant service to medicine through a range of multiple practice roles, to doctors in rural and remote areas, and to the community”.

ALM13 - Introduction to Point-of-Care Ultrasound for GPs

Summary

The Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound for GPs Active Learning Module (ALM) workshop aims to familiarise general practice registrars and GPs with the applications of point-of-care ultrasound as an instrument for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract

Biography

Dr Jason Lam was originally a professional dancer and artist before a collapsed lung changed his career path. He studied medicine at Flinders University in South Australia before working in both Plastic Surgery and Dermatology. Here Jason gained advanced skills in skin cancer assessment and management with particular focus on minimally-scarring surgery. He gained his Fellowship in General Practice and has also completed a Diploma of Child Health, a Certificate in Practical Dermoscopy and a Masters of Sports Medicine. Jason is the Crichton Dance Medicine Fellow with the Australian Ballet and also works with Carlton VFLW, Orchestra Victoria and Combat Sports Victoria. His research has resulted in publications and presentations nationally and internationally in dance medicine and in hand surgery. Jason is a medical educator with Eastern Victoria GP Training and also enjoys many public speaking engagements. He is passionate about the use of ultrasound in primary care, and has been the facilitator for the RACGP’s POCUS ALM numerous times.
