This presentation begins with a brief overview of the impact of climate on health and the impact of provision of health services on climate, drawing on information from global and national sources. Using a real-world example, the bulk of the presentation covers the steps a medical practice can take to make them more sustainable in a range of areas - including energy/water use, waste management, procurement decisions, changing practices to increase efficiencies and reduce office waste. Also covered is the way in which environmental sustainability can be incorporated in the practice's business plan and everyday activities. The presentation ends with a number of key home messages as a call to action.

Learning Outcomes: • An understanding of the impact of the provision of health services on climate; Practice strategies which can be incorporated into everyday activities to improve sustainability; An enthusiasm for implementing and driving change in their practices.

Biography

Sophie Piron has been Business Manager at Adelaide City General Practice since 2010 - a mixed billing practice with a varied patient base including university students, city workers, asylum seekers and refugees, tourists and residents of the city and the wider metropolitan area. The practice provides outreach clinics to an aged care disability service and a centre for homeless people. The practice is passionate about social justice and Sophie’s role as manager is to ensure a viable business whilst continuing to provide quality services to disadvantaged people in the community. The practice is a teaching practice and is regularly involved in research. Sophie holds a Degree in Speech Pathology and a Master in Business Administration. Sophie has been an active member of the AAPM SA/NT State Committee for the past 6 years and is an AGPAL General Practice accreditation co-surveyor. Prior to her work in General Practice Sophie owned her own consultancy in country South Australia providing a range of services to the local community and Local Government including the establishment of a Natural Resource Centre, a not for profit organisation, which she went on to manage for 13 years. For over 35 years Sophie has had a passionate interest in environmental issues, with a particular focus on the impact which individual actions can have in addressing Climate Change. Sophie is a member of the Climate Reality Project, having trained under Al Gore in raising awareness about climate change and advocating for action.
