Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping healthcare, yet many practice owners remain uncertain about how to use it safely and within the law. Avant’s 2024 AI Education Campaign surveyed hundreds of doctors and revealed strong interest in AI’s potential to improve efficiency and documentation, alongside significant concerns about data privacy, accuracy, and medico-legal risk.
This presentation will share the key findings from that campaign and translate them into practical insights for practice owners. Drawing on Avant’s medico-legal and practice-management expertise, the session will explore;
- How GPs are currently using AI in clinical and administrative settings, and the emerging risks identified in Avant’s national campaign.
- Privacy and data security obligations when using AI tools that process or store patient information, including consent, data ownership, and cloud storage requirements.
- Medico-legal implications of relying on AI-generated documentation or decision-support tools, particularly when errors or omissions occur.
- Practical governance measures to manage these risks, such as staff education, transparent patient communication, and clear policies for technology adoption.
Examples drawn from member queries and privacy incidents will be used to illustrate common pitfalls and the steps practices can take to avoid them.
Delivered by Avant’s medico-legal and risk advisory experts, this presentation will help practice owners confidently navigate the use of AI in everyday practice while maintaining compliance with privacy and professional standards.
