Details

Effective use of data is central to driving continuous quality improvement in general practice. As the RACGP 6th edition Standards place a stronger emphasis on demonstrating both the rationale for quality improvement activities and the outcomes achieved, practice teams must be able to interpret, analyse, and apply data meaningfully throughout the full Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycle.
Data enables practices to identify priority areas, monitor trends, benchmark performance internally and externally, and evaluate the impact of interventions over time. Key data sources—such as patient demographics, population health statistics, clinical outcome measures, practice performance indicators, and patient feedback—provide essential evidence to support improvement planning and accreditation requirements.
Examples include monitoring immunisation coverage, diabetes outcomes, health summaries, incident reporting, and preventive care activities. These metrics enable practices to evaluate clinical effectiveness, identify variations in care, and make informed, evidence-based decisions that improve patient outcomes and operational performance.
This presentation will explore practical strategies for integrating data into everyday quality improvement processes, with a focus on preparing for the strengthened requirements in the RACGP 6th edition Standards.
Participants will learn how to link data insights to quality improvement initiatives, document actions and results, and demonstrate compliance with QI Standard 1 and QI Standard 2, including the use of aggregated data to evidence change. By building confidence and capability in using data for improvement, practices can embed a stronger culture of quality, accountability, and patient-centred care.
