Presented by A/Prof Nancy Sturman and Dr. Sue Ballantyne - In this session our speakers will present cases and discuss the management of patients with chronic pain and/or dependence. They will provide updates on pain management, opiate agonist treatment, the ICE epidemic, regulatory guidelines you need to be aware of, medicinal cannabis and other difficult topics.

Biography

A/Prof Sturman is the Deputy Director of the Primary Care Clinical Unit at the University of Queensland, and works part-time clinically for UQ Health.

Dr Sue Ballantyne MB ChB, MPH, FChAM. Sue has worked for Queensland Health for the last 20 years particularly in the area of alcohol and drug services. At present Sue is the Senior Medical Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer and Healthcare Regulation Branch. Sue has been involved in the alcohol and drug field for over 25 years including working within the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program and still undertakes clinical work within the correctional service setting. Sue has had previous experience in the fields of oncology and palliative care, emergency medicine and was in general practice for a number of years both in New Zealand and Australia. As Medical Advisor Sue works with all the teams within the Branch to assist in the development of policy, compliance monitoring and provides regulatory and clinical advice in relation to the use of opioids and other drugs of dependence, education and support to other health professionals particularly externally.
